FAIRLEA, WV. (VR) – Alleghany put together one of its strongest team performances of the season, going 4–1 against a deep field of West Virginia programs and finishing the day with a dramatic win in the third-place match.
The Cougars opened the tournament against Independence, the reigning Class AA Region III champions, and dropped a 42–30 decision in what proved to be the Patriots’ closest match on their way to the tournament title.
Alleghany responded quickly and decisively. The Cougars rolled past Capital All-Stars 63–12, followed with a 58–18 win over Midland Trail, and then edged Greenbrier West 46–33 to secure a spot in the third-place bout.
The day closed with the most dramatic match of the tournament, a 42–39 victory over Woodrow Wilson, the defending Class AAA Region III champions. The dual came down to the final bout, where senior Ethan Shue battled through a tough decision to clinch the team win for AHS.
Individually, Nick Powell, Tristan Madison, Carter Nicely, and Parker Osborne each turned in perfect days, finishing 5–0 on the mat as Alleghany capped a statement performance against some tough competition.
