COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — The Covington Middle School administration was alerted Tuesday morning, Oct. 28, to a threatening comment posted on social media by an individual not enrolled at the school, according to Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.

School officials immediately notified law enforcement, and the Covington Division of Police began investigating the matter. Authorities later confirmed that an individual is now in custody in connection with the post.

“At all times, students and staff were safe, and there was no immediate threat to school safety,” Superintendent Kim Halterman said in a statement. “We are grateful for the prompt response of our law enforcement partners.”

Classes continued as normal throughout the day, and school officials emphasized that the safety of students and staff remains their top priority.

The Covington Division of Police is not releasing additional details about the investigation at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 540-965-6333.
