RICHMOND, Va. (VR) — Vehicle accidents involving deer are on the rise this time of year.
Fall is deer mating season. That leads to an increased presence of the animals on and near roadways across the Commonwealth. That’s why the SCC Bureau of Insurance wants Virginia drivers to evaluate their auto insurance coverage.
“Virginia drivers can often find themselves face to face with deer on highways and busy streets with no warning. People behind the wheel will react instinctively, putting other cars on the road at risk,” Virginia Insurance Commissioner Scott White said. “With this in mind, we encourage them to contact their insurance agent or company to see what their auto policy covers regarding accidents with deer and other wildlife.”
It’s important to differentiate between what liability-only and other-than-collision (or comprehensive) auto policies cover.
Vehicle damage from a crash with deer may not be covered under a liability-only policy. “Other-than-collision” coverage responds if there’s a crash with deer or other wildlife, as well as damage from theft, wind, hail, flood, fire or vandalism.
Drivers who hit deer with their vehicles, once pulled over to safety, should contact law enforcement and their insurance agent or company. Take pictures of the scene and any damage to your vehicle. Call a tow truck if the vehicle is rendered inoperable due to the accident.
Paying attention when behind the wheel goes a long way in minimizing the risk of an impact with deer. Speed also plays a factor in these incidents, so obey posted speed limits.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid evasive maneuvers like swerving if a deer runs into the road. Though car accidents can be scary and leave drivers and passengers shaken, it’s best to avoid performing actions that might put other drivers and their passengers at risk.
