SELMA, Va. (VR) – On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Alleghany County Public Works conducted annual hydrant flow testing in the Selma area. During this testing, a surge of pressure caused several sections of water line to break; this is called a “water hammer.” Public Works crews immediately began repairs, which we completed by 7 AM on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. To ensure permit compliance and safe drinking water for our citizens and customers, we immediately initiated a precautionary Boil Water Notice for affected citizens and customers. Also, we have been working closely with the Virginia Department of Health to monitor the repairs and subsequent testing. The first round of water sampling tests received today showed no concerns. A second round of test results should be returned tomorrow, Friday, August 8, 2025. Once all test results are received, we will notify the public of any additional steps necessary to ensure safe drinking water for our citizens and customers.
