WAYNESBORO, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Cougars made their Shenandoah District debut Monday August 4th, competing against some of the area’s top golf programs in the season-opening 18-hole match at Orchard Creek Golf Course.
In their first official district competition, the Cougars finished with a team score of 370, placing seventh in a field of nine. Rockbridge County came away with the team victory, shooting a 329 to edge Staunton (333) and Wilson Memorial (341) in a tightly contested match. While the final standings didn’t land Alleghany near the top this time, the round served as a valuable early-season measuring stick against strong opponents and on a challenging course.
Rockbridge’s Dean Fafatas (74) helped power the Wildcats to the win, finishing as the individual runner-up behind Wilson Memorial’s Jaxson Devereux, who took medalist honors with an impressive two-under-par 70.
The Shenandoah District will continue its 18-hole schedule on Monday August 11th when teams travel to The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs — giving Alleghany a chance to play closer to home and continue adjusting to district competition.
