COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On Tuesday, August 5th, the Covington Police Department will once again take part in National Night Out, a nationwide initiative that promotes strong community-police relationships. The event offers residents a chance to meet officers in a casual, welcoming environment—an opportunity that Covington Police Chief Chris Smith says is key to fostering trust, transparency, and a sense of unity throughout the city.

“We participate in a lot of community events and programs as a way to build trust and rapport with the citizens of Covington,” the chief said. “It is important to me that when residents, business owners, and guests think of our community, they think of the Police Division.”

At its core, National Night Out aims to humanize officers by creating positive interactions outside of enforcement or crisis. The chief emphasized how crucial it is for officers to be seen in the community in casual, meaningful ways. “Unfortunately, if you are a victim or a suspect, most interactions with law enforcement are going to be negative in nature,” he said. “Having the opportunity to talk to a police officer in a relaxed setting allows for that positive interaction.”

This year’s event promises an array of activities for all ages, including displays and demonstrations by first responders, city officials, and community partners. Free food, drinks, giveaways, and entertainment will be provided. One of the highlights, according to the chief, will be the opening of the city pool for families to enjoy—a welcome relief amid recent heat waves. Another anticipated feature is the return of the crowd-favorite dunk tank. “If you ever wanted to dunk a cop, here is your opportunity,” the chief joked.

The evening also includes a more serious offering: child identification kits. “Partaking in this program allows a parent to have essential information that we need in time-sensitive situations,” he explained.

But beyond the fun and food, the message is clear—National Night Out is about relationships. Smith hopes that families leave the event with a lasting impression: “I want everyone to come by and just have a good time. Hopefully, when it’s over, everyone leaves knowing that their police division will always be there when they need them most.”

National Night Out will be held at the City Playground on Tuesday, August 5th, from 6-9 PM. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
