CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) — The air was filled with pride, excitement, and the echo of applause on Thursday night as Alleghany High School hosted its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2025. The Mountain Gateway Convocation Center was packed with proud families, friends, and community members, all gathered to celebrate a major milestone in the lives of the graduating seniors.

The evening began with a display of unity and patriotism as senior James Helmintoller-Quantz took the stage to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Following the pledge, Principal Derick Cantrell stepped forward, asking the crowd to join in a moment of silence to honor the late Assistant Principal Timothy Cochran, who passed away in February. The somber silence reflected the deep respect and affection the school community holds for Cochran, whose legacy clearly still resonates within the halls of Alleghany High.

In his address, Cantrell offered words of reflection and pride as he looked out at the Class of 2025. “This class has helped define what Alleghany High School is becoming,” Cantrell said, his voice filled with emotion. “From pep rallies that have shook the rafters, to a homecoming parade that packed the streets, and fireworks that lit up the sky — all of it fueled by the pride this community has in you. And you delivered.”

He went on to thank the many parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors who supported the seniors on their journey, reminding everyone that graduation is not just a celebration of academic success, but also a tribute to perseverance, growth, and community support.

School Resource Officer Scott Dudding followed with words of encouragement and admiration. “You have worked hard, stayed focused, and made it to this incredible milestone,” he told the graduates. “Tonight is a celebration of all that you have accomplished and the promises that lie ahead.”

Dudding then had the honor of introducing Salutatorian Keegan Morris. Standing confidently before his peers, Morris reflected on the support systems that helped the Class of 2025 reach this moment. “Everyone behind this cap and gown was a group of people who believed in us, supported us, and shaped us into who we are today,” he said, drawing nods and smiles from both students and parents. His speech served as a touching reminder of the collective effort behind each student’s success.

Next, teacher Daphine Livesay took the stage to introduce Valedictorian Kinlee Huffman, praising her many achievements both in the classroom and on the athletic court. Livesay described Huffman as a student who leads not just with her accomplishments, but with her character.

Taking the podium, Huffman delivered a message that was both humble and inspiring. “You don’t have to be the best person in your class or on the team,” she told her classmates. “You just have to show up. Be the best cheerleader for someone sitting beside you, or be the best role model for someone else.” Her words, grounded in empathy and encouragement, had guests clapping and wiping away tears.

With emotions running high and a sense of accomplishment filling the room, the ceremony moved into its final and most anticipated stage — the awarding of diplomas. One by one, the graduates crossed the stage to the sound of applause, cheers, and even a few joyful tears. For each name called, there was a moment of pride not just for the student, but for everyone who helped them along the way.

As the evening concluded and caps flew into the air, the sense of unity and celebration was undeniable. The Class of 2025 leaves Alleghany High School with memories, friendships, and lessons that will carry them far beyond the walls of the school.

To the graduates: your community is proud of you. May your next chapter be filled with purpose, courage, and continued success. Congratulations, Alleghany High School Class of 2025; the future is yours.
