COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Covington’s newest green space, Hotel Collins Park, came alive Friday night as it hosted its very first live music event, marking the beginning of the Covington Parks and Recreation Summer Music Series. With picture-perfect weather and the park in pristine condition, the debut event drew a lively crowd ready to enjoy a night of music and community spirit.
The featured entertainment was Phat Pocket, a high-energy band from Roanoke known for their eclectic mix of funk, R&B, soul, jazz, blues, country, western, and alternative music. The band took the stage with enthusiasm, delivering a dynamic performance that had everyone tapping their feet and dancing along. Their goal was simple: to have a good time—and they did just that, along with everyone in attendance.
This event was the first of several free concerts scheduled throughout the summer as part of the city’s broader music series. While the kickoff took place at Hotel Collins Park, future concerts will be held at various locations throughout Covington, giving residents the chance to explore different venues while enjoying live entertainment. Just bring a lawn chair, kick back, and relax.
The park itself holds special significance. Built on the site where the former Collins Hotel once stood, the area had long fallen into disrepair. But thanks to the vision and effort of the city, that once-neglected part of town has been transformed into a vibrant, welcoming space for the entire community. City Manager Allen Dressler, in an interview with The Virginian Review earlier this spring, expressed deep pride in seeing the city’s investment turn into a thriving community hub.
Hotel Collins Park is not only a symbol of renewal for Covington but also a new cultural centerpiece—with this summer’s music series setting the stage for even more community events to come.
