COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Cougars Varsity baseball team brought early fire and a standout performance on the mound from Tyler Jackson, but couldn’t find their rhythm at the plate in a tough 5-0 loss to Carroll County on Tuesday night.
Jackson was electric on the hill, giving the Cougars a fighting chance from the start. Jackson went an impressive five strong innings, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. He mixed his pitches well, kept hitters off balance, and battled through pressure situations with poise. His command and competitive edge gave Alleghany early momentum and set the tone for a game that remained within reach until the late innings.
Offensively, the Cougars had their chances, with Tucker Phillips and Trey Cook both collecting two hits. But Alleghany’s bats couldn’t deliver in the clutch, stranding runners and missing opportunities to support Jackson’s strong outing.
Carroll County broke through in the third inning, sparked by Peyton Spencer’s RBI single and a steal of home. The Cavaliers capitalized on a few Alleghany miscues and used aggressive baserunning to keep control of the game.
Despite the loss, the Cougars remained competitive throughout the game, but the lack of production at the plate proved to be the difference. While they managed to put runners on base, timely hits were hard to come by, and scoring opportunities slipped away. As they move forward, Alleghany will look to reignite their offense and turn solid at-bats into runs, aiming to capitalize in clutch situations and bounce back in their next game with James River on Friday. The Cougars are 4-8 for the season with seven games left.
