LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — The Alleghany Highlands YMCA is once again an enthusiastic participant in the Give Local Alleghany Highlands campaign, this year scheduled for Tuesday, May 20. Early giving starts May 6.
Give Local Alleghany Highlands, now in its fifth year, gives residents an opportunity to learn more about services offered through local nonprofits and to support these organizations with their donations. This unique fundraising event is hosted by The Alleghany Foundation and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
This year’s Give Local Alleghany Highlands includes an increase in prize money.
“We appreciate the efforts of The Alleghany Foundation in once again holding Give Local Alleghany Highlands,” said Bobbie Wagner, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA president and CEO. “The foundation’s support of local nonprofits is commended and tremendously appreciated.”
In 2024, Give Local Alleghany Highlands raised over $490,000 from more than 475 generous donors. Through the contributions of 32 donors, the YMCA received $10,350 during last year’s Give Local Alleghany Highlands, earning the organization a sixth-place finish among large nonprofits. A total of 29 nonprofits have currently registered for the 2025 edition of Give Local Alleghany Highlands.
“We thank all of our donors for their generosity in 2024,” Wagner said. “We also thank them in advance for their support in the 2025 Give Local Alleghany Highlands event.”
The Alleghany Foundation will be providing thousands of dollars in prizes and bonus incentives in order to foster friendly competition between the various organizations and encourage donors to give locally this year. A new feature in 2025 is the addition of a medium-sized category that will be introduced to the Leaderboard and Power Hour competition. This initiative was created in response to feedback from past participating nonprofits
that fit between the small and large categories.
The largest award is the $3,500 grand prize given to the nonprofits that raise the most money, and prizes will be awarded to the top five nonprofits on each leaderboard. Donations made on May 20 can also help nonprofits win one of 30 Golden Ticket prizes, worth $250 each. Only online donations have the opportunity to be selected for a Golden Ticket prize, and all participating nonprofits are eligible to win one Golden Ticket.
The Power Hour competition is an hour-long fundraising sprint in which nonprofits aim to raise the most money within that timeframe. Power Hours will be categorized into small, medium and large nonprofits. Only online donations will count toward the Power Hours, and all participating organizations are eligible to win only one Power Hour.
The contest of “10 Unique Donors Pool Prize” is aimed to encourage individual participation and increase donations. The contest requires a minimum of 10 unique donors to qualify for the pool of funds. This pool of funds will be equally divided among all groups that achieve 10 or more unique donations. Unique donors are identified based on their email addresses.
