RUSTBURG, Va. (VR) – In a hard-fought game on the road, Alleghany’s softball team showed incredible grit and resilience, even in the face of a tough defeat. Coach Keith Morris couldn’t have been prouder of his team’s performance, despite the final score.
“We battled hard to the end against a very good team,” Morris said after the game. “We hit the ball good enough to win, but not in the right spots. Emma Skidmore pitched a heck of a game. No hits through 5 2/3 innings, but we gave up 2 late. Great performance by our team, and we’ll see them back home in a week.”
Skidmore, the standout pitcher of the night, was nothing short of phenomenal. The junior held the opposing team to no hits for nearly six innings, showcasing her dominance on the mound and keeping the game scoreless for the majority of the contest. It was a performance that had fans and teammates alike on the edge of their seats, impressed by her composure and control.
Offensively, the team showed flashes of brilliance, making solid contact with the ball throughout the game. However, they found it difficult to string together hits in the right moments, unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Despite this, the team’s resolve was evident as they battled through every at-bat, never giving up.
Coach Morris highlighted the effort and determination of his players, emphasizing how proud he was of their collective spirit. “Even in defeat, they showed a lot of heart,” he said. “It’s a long season, and this kind of effort is what will carry us forward.”
With the loss behind them, the team is already looking ahead to next week’s rematch on their home field.
As Morris put it, “We’ll see them back home in a week. We’ll be ready.” Despite the setback, the Alleghany team left the field with heads held high, knowing that their potential is limitless.
