CLIFTON FORGE, Va. —Special Theatrical Artists Revue & Showcase (STARS) will open its 29th performance season by presenting “Here Come the STARS” at the Historic Masonic Theatre on Sunday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m.
Founded in 1996, by Appalfolks of America Association, STARS is a troupe of 29 performers who have physical disabilities and/or intellectual challenges. STARS has grown from a troupe of ten to 29, and 23 performers are rehearsing for the April production under the direction of Paula Crance and Sonya Romanello. Chris Fisher will continue to emcee the STARS’ variety shows, and Ben Nicely will continue to serve as a substitute emcee when law enforcement duties prevent Fisher from filling the role.
STARS is sponsored by the Town of Clifton Forge’s Town Council, the City of Covington’s City Council, and Alleghany County’s Board of Supervisors. “Here Come the STARS” is a free show to the public, and STARS receives the donations made at the show while The Historic Masonic Theatre receives the funds from concession sales and rental fees paid by the sponsors.
M. Ray Allen, founder of AAA and the nonprofit organization’s president, remarked, “I wish to thank our sponsors for their generosity.”
He continued, “Here Come the STARS” is the third variety show in a row that our sponsors have made possible.”
“I thank Paula and Sonya for many years of service as directors and Chris and Ben for supporting STARS via their many hours spent emceeing the shows,” he concluded.
STARS has missed only one season of performing variety shows in the Alleghany Highlands, and that was due to COVID-19 that closed theatres throughout Virginia.
