On Friday (March 14, 2025), at 10:30 a.m., while working traffic enforcement in the town of New Castle in Craig County, Senior Trooper C. Viera-Cintron noticed a young child, approximately 22 months old, walking towards the middle of Salem Avenue. Trooper Viera-Cintron reacted quickly and grabbed the child before the child could get hurt.
After checking with nearby residences, Trooper Viera-Cintron then went to a nearby daycare facility, where it was determined the child had left his teacher from an area in the back of the daycare. The 22-month-old was away from the teacher for approximately 11 minutes.
The daycare facility has notified both the parents of the child and relevant permitting agencies, while Virginia State Police and the Craig County Sheriff’s Department notified the Department of Social Services.
The child was not injured.
Salem Avenue is also known as Route 311.
