ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (VR) – A treasure was found by custodian Ernest Jones in the archives at Sharon Elementary School — a grade book from Iron Gate School from 1914-1934. Many of the students and teachers listed in the book are ancestors of current residents of Alleghany County. The grade book will remain an artifact in the care of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools. It is being preserved under advice from AHPS parent Justin Halterman, who holds a Master of Arts degree in history. The grade book can be viewed in a display case near the Sharon Elementary School Library. Also on display, is a photograph of President Dwight D. Eisenhower that was presented to school officials in 1955. The present Sharon Elementary School building opened in 1964.
