Mildred Claudine Sheffey Humphries
Mildred Claudine Sheffey Humphries, age 99, of Covington, died Friday, January 18, 2025, at the Brian Center Rehabilitation & Nursing Care.
She was born, October 5, 1925, in Ivanhoe, and was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Payne Humphries, Sr.; three brothers, Andrew, Hansel and Lawrence Sheffey; three sisters, Sarah Anne Clark, Zada Joyce and Zola Wright.
To mourn Mildred’s loss is her son, Howard P. (Becky) Humphries, Jr. from Apex, NC; two daughters, Joan (Mike) Green, Laura (David) Persinger of Covington; and a sister, Catherine Brown of Covington; nine grandchildren, Lorraine (Richard Lee) Martin, Bradley (Trisha) Persinger, Nathan (Rachel) Humphries, Michelle (McKenzie) Craps, Patrick Doss, Michael Persinger, Leah (Tyler) Hathcote, Luke Humphries, Shannon (Josh) Johnston; thirteen great-grandchildren, Emmalee Persinger, Shiloh Craps, Adalyn Persinger, Brooklyn Persinger, Jonathan Martin, Emery Craps, Wrenn Hathcote, Jasper Hathcote, Otis Hathcote, Ruby Humphries, Josiah Humphries, Aidan Raether, Braylon Johnston; and a number of family members.
Mildred was a great granddaughter of preacher Robert Sawyer Sheffey, a well-known circuit preacher in Southwest VA and WV. She worked a number of years at the Rayon Plant. She was a charter member of Parrish Court United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Christian Endeavor Sunday School class and various church committees.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 21, at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Kropff officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at the Alleghany Memorial Park following the service.
Arritt Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the service arrangements.
The family suggest that memorial tributes in memory of Mildred Humphries take the form of contributions to Parrish Court United Methodist Church, 2343 S. Carpenter Drive, Covington, VA 24426.
