LOW MOOR – The Alleghany varsity boys basketball team is surging after having won their fourth game in a row following a 51-45 victory over Blacksburg in Low Moor last Friday.
After losing three in a row as they dropped their opening round game in the Northside Invitational to Auburn over a week ago, the Cougars have started to play their best basketball yet.
The turnaround for Alleghany started in that same tournament where they defeated Blacksburg in the consolation round, followed by beating Liberty Christian Academy in the fifth-place game.
Quickly the three straight losses were a blur of the past as AHS was headed into the new year above .500 basketball.
Alleghany opened up the new year last Monday with a 49-39 victory at home over Stuarts Draft where Chase DePriest (13) and Bubby Entsminger (12) combined for 25 points to lead the Cougars to their second win of the season over the SD Cougars.
Then this past Friday afternoon AHS once again knocked off Blacksburg following a 51-45 victory at the Chance Harmon Classic at Floyd County High School. The Cougars rallied from being down double digits in the second half as Xzavier Hayslett led the way with a team-high 15 points.
Alleghany (6-3) now winners of four in a row were set to kick off their Three Rivers District schedule on Tuesday at Carroll County, but that game has been postponed due to the weather.
Of course, weather permitting, the Cougars will begin district play on Thursday at home when they host James River.
