Katrina Leigh Hyler pled guilty this morning to felony child abuse and neglect during a hearing held in Alleghany County Circuit Court.
She was sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary, the maximum penalty allowed under the state statue.
Hyler was charged in the Jan. 20, 2008 death of her daughter Lakin Brown. Lakin was found unresponsive by the Covington Rescue Squad when they arrived at Hyler’s house in Covington and was dead on arrival at Alleghany Regional Hospital.
According to the Medical Examiner, Lakin died as a result of blunt force trauma to the abdomen. An autopsy showed “a clinical and historical picture of battered child syndrome with evidence of significant physical abuse and neglect.”
Jeffrey Ailstock, Hyler’s live in boyfriend was previously convicted of second degree murder and felony child abuse and is serving a 17 1/2 year sentence.
