LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — Twenty-five new members were recently inducted into the Alleghany High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. The ceremony was held at Hodnett Hall.
The National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized high school co-curricular student organizations with approximately 1.4 million members.
Membership in the National Honor Society is among the highest honors high school students can receive. It recognizes outstanding performance in the classroom and the community. The students represent the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
NHS chapters commonly volunteer at their school and in the community. Recently, the Alleghany High School NHS has worked to assist its school and community through three projects: collecting cleaning supplies for the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother program, collecting gently used stuffed animals for children, and recognizing local educators during American Education Week in November.
The AHS chapter now has 28 members. The three returning members are Brooklyn Hicks, Kinlee Huffman, and Gavin Via.
The new members are Presley Adams, Breanna Brookman, Peyton Broughman, Joowon Chung, Ashlee Deem, Hannah Hensley, Ella Hicks, Faith Holt, Kayden Jack, Taylor Jenkins, Evelyn Jessee, Kathryn Johnson, Kiera Lowman, Alaina McCormick, Selina McMillion, Meredith Minter, Keegan Morris, Sophia Mundy, Carter Nicely, Tucker Phillips, Zeke Saville, Brenden Seckner, Emma Skidmore, Taylor Stayton, and Shanita Sterling.
Huffman is president. Hensley is the vice president. Sterling serves as secretary. Sonya Howell, the coordinator of school counseling at AHS, is the NHS sponsor.
Alleghany High School is part of the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division. The school division was established in July 2022 when Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center merged.
AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students. Alleghany County and the City of Covington jointly fund the school division.
