Herbert Scott Mitchell
Herbert Scott Mitchell, 66, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, on November 21, 2024. Known affectionately as Scott, he was a man whose life was marked by dedication, love, and a profound connection to family.
Born on December 9, 1957, in Baltimore, Maryland, Scott was the son of the late Herbert Stevenson Mitchell and Beatrice Elizabeth Tender Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Ovila Joseph Cormier and Velma Jean Beavers Cormier. Raised in McLean, Virginia, Scott graduated from Langley High School in 1976. He pursued further education at Northern Virginia Community College and Diesel Mechanic School, completing his studies in 1978. That same year, he embarked on a 40-year career with Interstate Van Lines, where his dedication and work ethic were evident to all who knew him.
Scott’s love for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his life. Summers spent at the Eastern Shore of Maryland were filled with boating, crabbing, and savoring fresh seafood with his family. As he grew older, his interests expanded to include fixing and racing cars at Old Dominion Speedway. He was an avid sports enthusiast, attending football and baseball games, NASCAR races, and golf tournaments with great enthusiasm.
In 1989, Scott met the love of his life, Shannon. They married on February 23, 1991, and began their family in Annandale, Virginia, later that year. Scott was overjoyed to become a father, especially when his wish for a baby girl came true with the birth of their daughter, Ashley. He took immense pride in watching her grow, teaching her to ride a bike, cheering her on at sporting events, and witnessing her graduate from Clemson
University. Scott’s pride in Ashley was boundless, and he often shared his joy with anyone who would listen.
Becoming a grandfather was another source of immense happiness for Scott. He adored his granddaughters, Annabelle and Adaline, and cherished every moment spent with them. His stories about their adventures together were a testament to the deep love he held for his family.
In 2021, Scott and Shannon moved to their retirement home in Covington, Virginia, a place Scott had lovingly built by hand. This home became a sanctuary where they could enjoy their time together, surrounded by the beauty of nature. Scott found joy in his tractor, ATVs, and Side x Side, and he kept himself busy with a part-time job that allowed him to travel across the U.S., spend time with his grandchildren, and embark on
new projects around the house and farm.
Scott was a strong-willed and outspoken man who lived life to the fullest. His love for his family and friends was unwavering, and his legacy of love and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Scott is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Shannon Cormier Mitchell; his daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and Keith Calder; and his beloved granddaughters, Annabelle and Adaline Calder. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Wanda Mitchell; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lisa and Dwayne O’Neal; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish the
memories they shared with him.
In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated.
