LOW MOOR – In a move that has been long talked about and all but confirmed, last Tuesday the Virginia High School League executive committee made it official that Alleghany High School will be saying goodbye to the Three Rivers District and will be moving to the Shenandoah District next Fall in 2025.
The Cougars will be joined by Rockbridge County High School, who are leaving the Valley District, and are also heading to the Shenandoah District.
Alleghany and Rockbridge will join a juggernaut district that will now feature nine teams, including Riverheads who has competed in eight straight state championships between the Class 1 and Class 2, while winning seven in a row before losing to Radford last season. The Gladiators also made a change to their athletics as they moved back to Class 1 after only a year at the Class 2 level.
Luray also joins Riverheads in the move from Class 2 to Class 1.
Along with Alleghany, Rockbridge, and Riverheads, the Shenandoah District also consists of Buffalo Gap, Staunton, Waynesboro, Fort Defiance, Stuarts Draft, and Wilson Memorial.
While the Cougars are moving districts, they will remain in Class 3. Staunton, Waynesboro, Rockbridge County, and Wilson Memorial are all a part of Class 3, while Fort Defiance and Stuarts Draft are a part of Class 2, and Riverheads and Buffalo Gap are Class 1 schools.
The Class 3, Region C will be moving from 17 to 18 schools. Harrisonburg will be the newest member of the region after being a part of Class 5. The Blue Streaks joined the Valley District this past Fall.
The Three Rivers will gain Martinsville to replace Alleghany. The Bulldogs are currently a part of the Piedmont District.
