Work on the new coal tipple being erected by the C. & O. Railroad, now engaged in making extensive improvements to its local yards, is nearing completion and is expected to be ready for use in about a week. Work on four new side-tracks being laid in the local yards is also being rushed to completion.
When the coal tipple and four new tracks are completed the car capacity of the local yards will be about doubled.
In order to enlarge the yards, it was necessary for the railroad company to move the present depot distance of approximately 300 feet. It said the company will erect a modern brick freight depot within the next few months to take the place of the place of the frame building new in use.

CLIFTON FORGE – Led by five senior letterman and junior quarterback Lawrence Berry, the Clifton Forge Mountaineers should find out how strong they are after their first three games.
They open Sept. 6 against the 1973 Peidmont district champions, Drewry Mason, on the latter’s home field. The next two games are with Glenvar and Lexington, both of which had 9-1 records in 1973. Mountie Coach Ed Scott said he understands all three teams have a large number or returnees and should be strong again. The Glenvar and Lexington games will be at Memorial Park Clifton Forge. Scott noted that the Mounties were 5-5 last year and “we definitely hope to improve on that record”.” Scott was able to report over the weekend that the Mounties have no significant injury problems.
