The Covington City Council gathered on Tuesday, April 2, to recognize the dedication and service of several members of the Covington Police Department. The ceremony, led by Police Chief Chris Smith, showcased the promotions of current officers as well as the introduction of new members to the force. Among the highlights were the ceremonial badge pinning by friends and family, symbolizing the commitment and support for those serving in law enforcement.
One of the notable promotions honored was that of Sergeant Daniel “Craig” Agee, who was elevated to his new rank on February 1, 2024. Sergeant Agee brings a wealth of experience, having served in the United States Army Reserve from 2011 to 2019, followed by six years of dedicated service in various law enforcement capacities, including the Prince William County Police Department and the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office. He now assumes the role of Patrol Supervisor, entrusted with overseeing critical operations within the department.
Joining Sergeant Agee in his promotion are Corporal Harry “Butch” Brown and Corporal Jacob Tolley, both of whom were elevated to their new ranks on February 26, 2024. Corporal Brown boasts an impressive 25 years of combined law enforcement and correctional experience, having served in esteemed institutions such as the Augusta Correctional Facility, Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, and Clifton Forge Police Department. His current assignment involves the crucial responsibility of Animal Control & Patrol. Similarly, Corporal Tolley, with sixteen years of law enforcement experience under his belt, including eight years as a Reserve Deputy with the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, assumes the role of Patrol K-9 Officer, contributing his expertise to this specialized field.
In addition to the promotions, the Covington Police Department welcomed new officers to its ranks. Officer Levi Allman, who began his service on June 13, 2022, brings a unique background, having served in the United States Army and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, followed by a career as a registered nurse. His current assignment involves Patrol & Regional Emergency Response Team duties. Officers Joshua Cox and Bryar Jack, who commenced their service on January 4, 2023, and June 14, 2023, respectively, also join the force, contributing to the department’s commitment to serving the community through patrol duties.
Notably, School Resource Officer Mike Browning, who commenced his role on September 18, 2023, brings a wealth of experience, including service in the US Navy and Virginia State Police for over three decades. His current assignment involves ensuring the safety and security of Jeter Watson Elementary School, where his presence provides reassurance and support to both students and faculty.
The recognition and promotion of these officers underscore the Covington City Council’s commitment to supporting law enforcement and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
