Once upon a time, the world moved at a snail’s pace. There was no such thing as the internet, television, or cell phones, and things just advanced at a much slower rate. The house was always clean, typically by the mother who stayed home to raise the children while their father was off at work. As the old saying went: “Father brings home the bacon and mother cooks it.”

However, those times are long behind us and most would agree it’s for the best. Yet, with changing times and added technology, it brings with it a faster-paced world ruled by electronics and busy schedules. Suddenly it’s necessary to have a little help doing the mundane chores that now-working moms find limited time to accomplish, even with the help of a much-willing partner. Enter “Christie’s Cleaners!”

Christie Williams, owner and operator of “Christie’s Cleaners” —located at 909 S.Highland Avenue in Covington— was kind enough to sit down with the Virginian Review to talk about the business she says she’s run for the past 5 years. Williams obtained her business license in February of 2019 and opened “Christie’s Cleaners” immediately after.

Those who remember “Ritsch’s Cleaners” are likely to remember Christie from the time she spent there as an employee prior to opening up her own business. Under the ownership of Russell and Emma McCroskey, Williams said she always loved what she did at “Ritsch’s Cleaners” and began to investigate all she’d need to do in order to run her own laundry/dry cleaning business after Emma McCroskey received a head injury. “She was never the same after that,” Williiams said, “… but she [Emma McCroskey] did say, ‘I wondered when you were going to pick up that iron.’” In the second room of her little shop, Williams hangs a special banner she had made in honor of her friends whose influence led to her starting her own business.

And the rest, as they say, is history! “Christie’s Cleaners” handles regular laundry in-house for “Whatever you do at home,” Williams said, while “Town and Country” takes care of the dry cleaning. This strategic collaboration ensures customers have access to a specialized dry cleaning service twice a week, enabling “Christie’s Cleaners” to provide extensive laundry care under one roof for her busy customers.

“Christie’s Cleaners” is open 5 days a week, Monday through Friday with hours varying. On Mondays and Fridays, they are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the hours slightly vary at 9am to 4pm. Wednesdays are their short days with services being offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They can be reached by phone at (540) 965-3021 or you can visit “Christie’s Cleaners” in person at 909 S. Highland Avenue in Covington.
