Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School, a live musical presentation adapted from Barbara Park’s best-selling Junie B books will be presented on Saturday, March 25 at 3:00 pm on stage at The Historic Masonic Theatre. The show, written by Ever After and Dear Edwina writing team Marcy Heisler (book and lyrics) and Zina Goldrich (music and vocal arrangements), joins Music Theatre International’s Theatre for Young Audiences Collection, which features family-friendly shows with abbreviated running times that are intended for small casts of adults to perform for children. The work was originally developed by Theatreworks USA and debuted at Off-Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2016. The story picks up as Junie B. Jones has been in school for more than one and a half years, leaving her with lots of tips and tricks to share on how to make it through the entire school day, from bus rides to snack time.
Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich have artfully brought Junie’s irrepressible wit and charm to life on stage through a clever script and a truly infectious score that will have adults and young audience members singing and dancing their way out of the theatre. A self-appointed expert on all things first grade, Junie B. is determined to write the ultimate guide – “Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School”. As she deals with writer’s block and constantly getting into trouble, Junie B. quickly realizes that she still has a lot to learn.
Featuring upbeat songs, ”Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School” is a hilarious, whole-hearted show about owning up to your mistakes and how nobody is ever done learning. Now that’s she’s been in school for a while, Junie B. Jones has decided to write down everything she knows for future first graders (“Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School”). In Mr. Scary’s classroom, everyone is excited about Junie B.’s idea to write a guide. Junie B. explains to her Mother that she doesn’t want other people to help with writing the guide because she wants to be “the star of the whole production”.
