Gavin Haynes, a former physical education teacher at Alleghany High School, pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of indecent liberties with a child charges on Mon., Aug. 15, in the Alleghany County Circuit Court.
Haynes, 35, served as JV basketball head coach, JV baseball head coach and an assistant varsity football coach at AHS in addition to teaching physical education classes.
He was arrested on Jan. 10, and his bond was granted on Jan. 20.
He was indicted on Jan. 10, for 31 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship. Twenty-three of the charges were dismissed in court on Monday.
The 31 offenses occurred between June of 2010 – 2016, Haynes was 24 when it started.
Haynes’ sentencing has been set for Nov. 22, and two of the four victims were in the courtroom on Aug. 15. All four victims are female students.
Prosecuting Attorney Ann Gardner reported that all four victims were in agreement with the plea deal.
As a result of his plea bargain, Haynes will be registered as a sex offender, and he faces up to five years in the penitentiary.
