Snow began falling on Sunday morning just before 10:00 a.m. and continued to transform the Alleghany Highlands into a winter playground for students who were out of school for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday.
After ending near midnight, Izzy had blanketed the area with 6-8 inches of snow,, the deepest snowfall of the New Year.
Drivers of snowplows were busy clearing parking lots in Clifton Forge and Covington throughout the day, and VDOT had cleared Route 220, I-64, and many other roads in Alleghany County before noon.
Songbirds sought out birdfeeders Monday morning after they found the woods filled up with snow. Children with their sleighs were climbing the hill above what once was the Alleghany Country Club’s golf course adjacent to Alleghany High School.
