Big Fourth Quarter Helps Lift Narrows Past Covington; Bragg Drops 19 Points

Thanks to a big fourth quarter, the Narrows Green Waves (7-2) girls basketball team, held on to defeat the Covington Cougars (2-10) 50-41.

After taking a double digit lead into the second quarter, it seemed as if the Green Waves, had an easy rout towards victory.

The Cougars had opened the game with a quick basket from Lauren Bragg in the first minute of the game.

Then, the Green Waves, went on a 13-0 run, all while holding the Cougars scoreless for the rest of the first quarter.

Despite being down double digits in the second quarter, the Cougars, with a ton of heart and passion began to chip away at the deficit and even brought the lead all the way down to three points by the end of the first half.

The Cougars, had a scoring drought of 10 minutes before finally ending the Green Waves scoring run at 15 consecutive points unanswered.

Led by Lauren Bragg and her game-high 19 points, the Cougars, were right back in the game. Bragg’s eight-point second quarter helped cut into the teams deficit.

In the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets, back and forth. At one point, the Cougars, who had not had a lead since the opening minute of the game, fought all the way back to take a lead.

By the end of the third quarter, we were right back to where we started the half, a three point game 29-26.

In the fourth quarter, both teams caught fire from the floor.

The Cougars, who dropped in three three-pointers, were within one point after Bragg’s three-pointer at 35-34.

With a chance to tie the game, Cristi Persinger, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw. After the miss, the Green Waves, had a fast break that led to an easy layup which increased their lead to 37-34.

The layup, started a 10-0 scoring run for the Green Waves, as the team regained a double digit lead at 45-34.

Kayla Bartley, knocked down her second of two three-pointers made, to shrink the deficit down to single digits at 45-37.

It wasn’t enough though as the Green Waves, in the last few minutes were able to close out the Cougars.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, the team grabbed a solid all-around performance from Persinger, who was second in scoring for the team with seven points to go along with a tied game-high nine rebounds (with Bragg), four assists, and a five steals.

Mya Robertson, led the way for the Green Waves with a team-high 11 points.

The Cougars are on the road Friday night as they meet up with Highland County at 6:00 p.m.
