The maintenance staff at Scott Hill Retirement Community at 800 West Ridgeway St. in Clifton Forge recently erected a hand-built star on the side of the building that is visible from I-64.
Tim Nicely, marketing associate, noted that the intent of placing the star where it can be seen from the interstate is to serve as a “calling card” for Scott Hill and the Town of Clifton Forge.
Operating as the C&O Hospital until 1971 when it was renamed Emmett Memorial Hospital, Scott Hill Retirement Community was established after Alleghany Regional Hospital was opened in Low Moor in 1979, ending the facility’s long history as a hospital that dates back to 1897 when the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad established its hospital at the Gladys Inn in Clifton Forge.
Currently, Scott Hill Retirement Community operates as an affordable independent retirement community located on a hill overlooking the Jackson River and the CSX’s railyard. CSX Transportation and the C&O merged on Aug. 31, 1987, 10 years following the groundbreaking for Alleghany Regional Hospital that has since become Lewis Gale Hospital Alleghany.
