December 28, 1996: Forest Service Accepting Trees For Wildlife
Any Alleghany Highlands resident who want to dispose of their used 1996 Christmas tree in a way that helps wildlife rather than burning it or taking it to a landfill may take their cleaned used trees to the James River District office of the U.S. Forest Service in Covington Dec. 26, 1996 through Jan. 7, 1997.
The Forest Service is accepting used trees which have been cleaned for use in forming brush piles as wildlife habitat for small and non-game species of wildlife. Only cleaned trees will be accepted. Trees containing sprays, paint, tinsel and other decorative materials will be rejected since these items are not asthetically pleasing or kind to the environment.
The James River District office is located at 810A Madison Ave. in Covington, and trees may be taken there for inspection and deposit between Thursday, Dec. 26 and Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
