CLIFTON FORGE — The seventh annual Soup-er Sunday on Nov. 7 was presented smoothly and deliciously with sold-out soups and eager customers. The John Hillert Soup-er Sunday Committee planned the event with convenient online sales and easy soup take-out delivered to each car—with no wait time!
Members of the Soup-er Sunday Committee include Janet Spearman, Lois Smith, Susan Goings, Janie Barnette, Jim Sortore, and Elizabeth Putnam.
Persons interested in making soup next year, please call the Historic Masonic Theatre (540) 862-5655 and leave your contact info. This event has grown and grown and next year’s goal is to include more chefs to raise more money. This year was the first year for six of the twenty-two chefs.
Much gratitude goes to the chefs who created their favorite soups. The 2021 chefs include Kathy Bryant, Janie Barnette, Hillcrest Mansion Inn-Martha Crawford, Carol Almarez, Betsy Carter, Buddy Carter, Big, Fat Jerry’s Seasonings and Old Dog Coffee-Jerry Meyer, Susan Meyer, Ann Wright, Adell Pettrey, Susan Goings, Jane Newkirk, Jack Mason’s Tavern, Alleghany Journal-Jerry Clark, Judy Clark, Michael’s NY Style Pizza-Jim Hodges, Joan Vannorsdall, Katie Liverman, Erin Hillert Bell, Jim Sortore, Ingrid Barber and Michel Galand with a monetary donation.
The chefs made the soups and packaged them in quart containers. Each quart sold for ten dollars with all proceeds going directly to Clifton Forge Area Food Pantry. The soups were organized and ready for taking out to each customer. Theatre Board member, Glen Bryant, on his walkie-talkie conveyed the customer’s name and car color to volunteer “runners”. Customers did not have to leave their cars. This procedure was developed in 2020 because of COVID. Prior to that time, each Soup-er Sunday soup was dished up by each chef on the Amphitheatre Stage and in later years, after renovation, in the Tom Dean Underground Lounge and Café. Homemade desserts were also available at that time. The Soup-er Sunday Committee will decide next year if the Take Out concept will continue or whether they will go back to the original soup-on-the-premises concept.
Monetary donations added to the soup sales for a total of $3,412.35 for the Clifton Forge Area Food Pantry (an increase from 2020 donation) which serves Clifton Forge and surrounding areas. Canned goods were also donated.
“The Soup-er Sunday committee is indebted to the excellent chefs and a supportive community. We are happy to be able to assist the Food Pantry, especially at this very busy time of year”, said Janet Spearman, committee member.
Next year’s John Hillert Soup-er Sunday will be scheduled for the first Sunday in November.
