The 2021-22 season of the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Men’s Basketball team will get underway on Tuesday, November 9, with an away game against Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
This is only the second season for the DSLCC Roadrunners, since the 2020-21 season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Roadrunners had a successful season their first year in action, finishing with a winning 14-10 record.
Brandon Garrett returns as head coach. He is being assisted by Ricky Haston, Parker Woody, Paul Pelter, Stephan Peter and Will McCurdy. During the year off, Garrett was busy recruiting for the Roadrunners and he feels like he’s got an impressive 19-man squad.
“I’m excited to get back on the floor and more excited about the student-athletes that we have brought into the program,” noted Garrett. “We spend countless hours trying to find the right fit for our program and think that will only pay dividends on the floor. We return 5 players from the 2019-2020 squad. We’ve also added some much-needed size.”
“We play a very tough schedule out of the gate. We play at Division 2 Southwest Virginia Community College, so that will be a real test for us early in the season, and it will let us know where we stand “
Coach Garrett said the team still has a lot of work to do, “but I like the potential that we have. We just need to make sure we get better each and every day. If that happens the wins will take care of themselves.”
The first home game is Thursday, November 18, against Appalachian Bible College.
Tip-off is at 7:00 pm in the DSLCC Convocation Center on the Clifton Forge campus.
Six New Sports to be Offered DSLCC’s new Athletic Director, Dan Callahan – who also serves as the Student Activities Coordinator – is in the process of adding six more sports at DSLCC: Women’s Flag Football; Women’s Basketball; Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track; Esports (gaming); and Cheerleading. Flag football will ready by the spring of 2023; the rest, by the fall of 2022.
DSLCC received a $10,000 grant from the National Junior College Athletic Association to underwrite Women’s Flag Football, notes Callahan, who has just started the search for a head coach the team.
Callahan came to DSLCC in August from Ohio and has a Master’s Degree in Sports Management. “At DSLCC, you’re not a number, you’re a name.” Callahan says when he recruits student athletes to attend DSLCC. “We are a small school with a strong emphasis on education or workforce training while competing in the sports they love.”
