Dunlap High School alumni, family and friends held a 13th reunion Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Covington Mosse Lodge.
Ninety-two persons attended. Forthy-seven alumnae were present from graduating classes 1948-1963. Others present at the reunion attended the school from elementary grades through high school. The school closed in 1963.
After a meal, a short program was held honoring the alumnae. The oldest graduate was Roselyn Ballard Boone, 1948; the youngest graduate was Sharon McAllister Hayslett, Class of 1963. Sandra Bradley traveled the longest distance. She came from California. Each was given a small cash reward.
As reported in the Virginian Review newspaper from Echoes of the Past from Oct. 17, 2019 …. “Superintendent of schools in Alleghany County said that the Dunlap Creek Consolidated School, near Hematite, will open on Thursday, Oct. 24. It is a modern nine-room building, not yet fully completed, but soon to be.”
The school grew in numbers over the years and its student excelled in academics. Some of its alumnae went on to become lawyers, doctors, educators, office workers, farmers, government employees, military leaders, and homemakers.
The first graduation ceremony was held on June 12, 1930, with seven graduates. The last class had 21 graduates. The ceremony was held on June 7, 1963.
The school property was sold to the Barr family and it was used for storage of farm supplies and equipment. After 33 years, the building was razed on Jan. 11, 1997.
The next gathering for Dunlap alumnae has been scheduled fro Sept. 24, 2022, at the Covington Moose Lodge.
