Last night, the Carroll County Cavaliers hung onto a 31-27 victory over the Alleghany Mountaineers.
Late into the third quarter, the Mountaineers held onto a slim 21-17 lead, but with under a minute to go in the quarter, the Cavaliers took the lead and never looked back.
Hanging onto a 24-21 lead going into the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers added to their lead with a touchdown and an extra point to take 31-21 lead with just over six minutes left in the game.
With their backs against the wall and facing a 4th-and-2, Garrett Via took a double reverse hand-off and ran it 42 yards into the end zone. After a made extra point, the Mountaineers were within four points at 31-27.
With 3:29 left in the game, the Mountaineers defense stepped up and forced the Cavaliers to punt.
With momentum on their side, it was the Cavaliers defense who stepped up and forced the Mountaineers to turn the ball over on downs with under two minutes to play.
The Cavaliers iced the game as the Mountaineers were without timeouts.
It was the Mountaineers seventh consecutive loss on the season, dropping their overall record to 1-7 and 0-4 in the Three Rivers District.
The team has two games left on the season. The Mountaineers travel to Floyd County next week, who are coming off of 42-7 loss to Radford last night, and then will wrap up the regular season, Tuesday, November 2nd at home against Bath County.
