The school names, mascot, and colors reflect the history of education in the Alleghany Highlands. The name of the merged school division, Alleghany Highlands, was chosen to align the schools with local endeavors to promote the region as a whole. The name incorporates Alleghany County, Covington, Clifton Forge and Iron Gate into public education and aligns with efforts by the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and other organizations to brand the region for economic development purposes.
