CLIFTON FORGE — Greg Dodd is a candidate for the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 2. He is seeking election to the Clifton Forge West District seat, which he has held since February.
Dodd was appointed to the seat to fill the remainder of Richard Shull’s four-year term. Shull resigned from the board and relocated to Botetourt County.
Dodd, a native of Charleston, W.Va., is one of five children born to Mary A. Dodd and the late Rev. Louis E. Dodd. Greg Dodd graduated from Herber Hoover High School in Clendenin, W.Va., in 1983.
“I have been living in Alleghany County for almost 21 years,” Dodd said. “My parents moved here when my father became pastor of Central Advent Christian Church. I am employed by Sayre Enterprises of Buena Vista, a military supply company that makes nameplates, badges, and reflective belts.”
Dodd, who is an elder at Central Advent Christian Church, became involved in Alleghany County government when he was appointed to the Board of Zoning Appeals in 2018. He served on the Board of Zoning Appeals until he was appointed to the board of supervisors in February.
“Presently, Alleghany County has an exceptional board of supervisors that works well together to serve all of the residents of Alleghany County,” he said.
Dodd said he does not believe in abstaining from voting as a board member and he is appreciative “that the board members are willing to explain the issues and lend help in bringing me up to date before voting on issues, all of which are important to the citizens of our county.”
Dodd said his campaign platform includes:
— Support of economic development efforts to bring jobs and diversified housing to the Highlands.
“We need to keep our graduates here in the Highlands,” he said. “To accomplish that, we need affordable housing. In order to attract a company or a new business, I will vote to support a tax break for a certain amount of time to bring in jobs.”
— Support of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and its deputies.
— Merger of Alleghany County and Covington schools to provide optimal education opportunities to students.
“I encourage interested persons in this endeavor to apply and run for the new school board,” he said.
— Increased funding for the Clifton Forge Public Library.
— Increased funding for The Historic Masonic Theatre.
“I admit that I am still learning how the county works, but if I can assist you in any way or answer any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to fund the answers or get it done,” Dodd said.
“I greatly appreciate your help and I would greatly appreciate your vote on November 2,” he added.
Early voting is underway in Virginia.
