Concerned Christian Baptist Church in Covington will celebrate the 21st anniversary of its pastor and first lady Sunday.
The anniversary program for the Rev. and Mrs. William O. HIckman III will be held at 3 p.m.
The guest speaker will be the Rev. Ed Mansfield, pastor emeritus of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Hot Springs. Music will be rendered by the Alleghany Highlands Community Choir.
The Rev. Hickman entered membership at High Street Baptist Church in December 1989. In 1992, he was selected as set apart as a trial deacon. He was ordained as a deacon in January 1993. In May of 1996, he was called to the ministry. On June 16, 1196, he delivered his initial sermon and was licensed by the late Rev. Dr. Noel C. Taylor at High Street Baptist Church in Roanoke. Dr. Taylor was a longtime mayor of Roanoke.
The Rev. Hickman was ordained in Christian ministry in October 200 and he began serving as pastor of Concerned Christian Baptist Church. In May 2001, Concerned Christian Baptist Church began monthly worship service, including open communion, at Liberty Nursing Home, Shenandoah Manor, The Springs, and the Brain Center nursing homes. In June 2001, the Rev. Hickman began serving as a chaplain at the Alleghany Regional Jail in Covington.
Since he came to Concerned Christian Baptist Church, the church facility has doubled in size through an addition. The church has also added handicap facilities.
On Aug. 5, the Rev. Hickman received the Good Neighbor Award from the McClinton Foundation.
