Not everyone will appreciate this column. Some will probably be outraged enough to write a letter to the editor. I don’t care. I’m sort of outraged, too.
But, I’m on the other side. The side that believes we could be nearly or completely rid of this awful, recurring virus if only everyone would get a simple shot of a Covid vaccine. Millions of us have done that. It was easy. It didn’t hurt. We are not now carrying a chip and being tracked by the government unless it’s through our omnipresent cell phones. That’s a real possibility. And that’s why my cell phone is not on unless I need to make a call. Then, it’s off again. I don’t know if that keeps me off anyone’s radar, but then again, who would need me on their radar?
The excuses I’ve heard for being unvaccinated are rather puny and nonsensical, really. I don’t buy any of them.
And, here’s a “funny” thing: Every night on the news, there are people in hospital beds, hooked up to ventilators, who say, “Gee; I wish I’d had the vaccine.”
Myself? I can’t wait to get my booster shot.
For a while there, the country was opening up again. We were no longer quarantined. (Personally, I rather enjoyed being quarantined). Venues and concerts and museums and restaurants began to open, and try to stay afloat. People flocked to them. But, it quickly became commonplace to see a football field or concert venue packed with thousands of people. And almost none of them were wearing masks.
I do not like wearing a mask. Who does, really? Especially in the summer, it is just too hot. But, nonetheless, I’m wearing one again when I go out to a place where I just somehow know many people are not vaccinated.
A friend of mine coined a great word for those who refuse to wear a mask or get a vaccine: “Spreadnecks.” I think it’s brilliant, and have made it part of my vernacular.
It’s weird how many of those homes and businesses that still insist on displaying political signs for a recent loser are occupied by the very same people who refuse to do the right thing and try to help put a stop to this cursed virus. And, when I hear that those people have come down with Covid, I am not sorry. I do not feel their pain. They’re getting their just “reward.”
Venues and festivals and such are being cancelled again. The Chocolate Festival in Clifton Forge? Cancelled. The Bath County Fair? Cancelled. The list keeps growing, and growing; these are just two recent events that come to mind. And, while it makes me disappointed, I see the point. Why work hard to put on an event, only to have it invaded by Spreadnecks? It puts everyone, even those of us who follow the rules, at risk.
So, if this column outrages you, well so be it. Go ahead and write your affronted letters, filled with your misguided opinions. A column is nothing but one person’s opinion. Everyone, as the saying goes, has an opinion. And this is mine.
Better yet, instead of picking up a pen and writing a letter, pick up your phone and make an appointment to get your vaccine. Maybe we can, if we work together, put an end to this virus. And, we’ve gotta love that … if it happens.
