Sylvanis “Van” Abshire, 85, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the home of his daughter. Van was born October 8, 1935, in Logan County, West Virginia, to Keenan and Georgia (Morgan) Abshire. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jean (Foley) Abshire, his parents, and 5 siblings.
Van moved to his home on Spruce St. in Covington in 1963 and enjoyed his “neighbor family” for the rest of his life. He served in the US Army and then was an engineer for Hercules, Inc., and JenFab Metal Fabrication.
Van was a proud father to Robin Franklin (Britt) of Auburndale, FL, Karen DeRosa of Castle Rock, CO, Karlena Bolin (Michael) of Covington, and Amy (Seth) Haberlein. He was dearly loved by his grandchildren and adored by his great-grandchildren.
Van loved to talk about Jesus and give away copies of the Bible. He was a faithful member of Solid Rock Ministries in Covington and loved his church family passionately. He was a talented wood-worker and metal-crafter. A celebration-of-life service will be held at Solid Rock Ministries (610 S. Alleghany Ave., Covington) on Saturday, August 28, at 11 a.m. His family would love to have all attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Solid Rock Ministries, P.O. Box 534, Covington, VA 24426.
