August 29, 1931: Hot Springs
The friends of Mr. H.B. Farnsworth will be interested to hear that he is improving. Mr. Farnsworth is at the Community House, having undergone an operation on Tuesday for appendicitis.
Mrs. George W. Oldham returned Wednesday from Sanford, N.C., where she was called by the serious illness of her sister, Mrs. O. C. Hunter, Mrs. Oldham was accompanied home by her brother, Mr. W. B. Kirkpatrick and his wife of Storrs, Conn.
Rev. Mr. George W, Oldham returned Monday from Massanetta Springs, Va., where he spent the last week attending a Bible Conference.
The Valley High School and the graded schools of Healing and Warm Springs will open Sept. 10, for the 1931-1932 session. Prof. Frank P. Cline, principal of the high school will arrive Sept. 1.

August 29, 1946:Tuck Confers With Bright On Question Of Rental Hardships
Governor Tuck said today he hopes to confer early next week with Dr. J. Fulmer Bright, state OPA director, on the matter of rental hardships.
Last week-end, the governor, who is now in the hospital for treatment of a foot injury and a general checkup, asked Dr. Bright to look into numerous reported evictions of tennants in Halifax County and elsewhere. The OPA administrator arranged an appointment to discuss the matter with Governor Tuck, but the injured foot sent the governor to the medical college hospital and the appointment was cancelled.
The governor said today he is feeling “considerably better” and hopes to be out of the hospital in a day or so.

August 28, 1971: Botetourt County School Holiday Schedule Listed
The office of the Botetourt County School superintendent has announced the following holidays for the 1971-72 school year which began Aug. 25: Sept. 6, Labor Day; Sept. 27 schools closed for District P., VEA meeting; Nov. 15, first day of hunting season; and Nov. 25 and 26, Thanksgiving holidays.
Botetourt County Schools will be closed Dec. 21, 1971 to Jan. 3, 1972 for Christmas holidays, with schools re-opening Jan. 4, 1972. Holidays during the second semester will include Jan. 18-19, workshop days for teachers, schools closed; and March 31 and April 3-7, spring holidays. The number of spring holidays will be reduced if time is lost because of bad weather.

August 28, 1996: DSLCC Literary Group Taking ‘Lumina’ Items
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s literary club is now accepting submissions for the fall edition of the “Lumina.”
The “Lumina” staff is accepting submissions of fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction from adult writers who reside in the region, as well as any current or past students of DSLCC. Those who submit work should have graduated from high school and/or be 18 years of age.
The deadline for submissions is October 1. There are guidelines for all submissions and those interested should contact Charlotte Morgan at DSLCC for the information.

August 28, 2011: Obama Faces Trouble With Key Voters
Whites and women are a re-election problem for President Barack Obama. Younger voters and liberals, too, but to a lesser extent.
All are important Democratic constituents that helped him win the White House in 2008 and whose support he’ll need to keep it next year.
An analysis of Associated Press-GfK polls, including the latest survey released last week, shows that Obama has lost ground among all those groups since he took office. The review points to his vulnerabilities and probable leading targets of his campaign as he seeks to assemble a coalition diverse enough to help him win re-election in tough economic times.
