August 21, 1931: Repair Storm Damage In VA.
The work of repairing damage amounting to thousands of dollars was begun today by workmen, following violent rain and electrical storms in many sections of the State late yesterday.
A storm in Richmond took the form of a cloudburst, with 4:34 inches of rain falling in eighty-six minutes. Damage to city property alone was estimated today by officials to be approximately $25,000, while the estimate could not be obtained on the damage to private property. In its duration of eighty-six minutes, the storm forced two airplanes to earth near Richmond, tore up sidewalks for a city block, wrecked porches, fences and yards of the city, while the flow of rainfall under the old brick wall behind historic St. John’s church caused it to collapse.
One man died during the storm in Roanoke, but the coroner today had not announced whether death was due to heart failure or electrocution.
State highway forces were busy today, where weather permitted, repairing roads and making new drainage lines from the main highways.
