The Giles County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on their official Facebook page stating that skeletal remains had been found on May 16. According to the statement, the department was called to Shumate Falls in Glen Lyn after a group of fishermen initially discovered the remains. The post further states that the remains, which were found on the bank of the New River, have been determined to be that of a human. In addition, a pair of high-top Under Armour shoes were discovered in the same vicinity.
After examination by the Medical Examiner, it is believed that the remains belong to a caucasian male between the ages of 40 and 60. According to the release from the Sheriff’s Department, the Medical Examiner further believes that the individual’s death occurred within the past year.
Investigators working on the case are reaching out to local jurisdictions in regards to missing person’s reports. According to the department’s statement, as of Thursday, May 20, no information has yet been matched. Officer Scott Moye said, “we are asking the public to share this information in an effort to identify this person so that the family can have closure.”
