Derek Burhenn and the Alleghany wrestling team made senior night a memorable one Wednesday.

In the final bout of the night, Burhenn both tied the AHS career win mark and secured a 41-34 dual win over Staunton River.

Burhenn joined fellow seniors Dakota Scott and Nathan Sizemore in being honored before the match.

Sizemore won by forfeit, while Scott earned a pin to make it a clean sweep for the Mountaineer seniors.

Burhenn’s win was number 108 of his career, equaling Mark Casstevens’ school record.

Burhenn is now 108-24 with 52 pins in his high school career, Sizemore is 91-32 with 57 pins, while Scott has a 72-37 record with 45 pins.

“There’s definitely a lot of wins walking off the mats next year with these three guys departing,” said AHS coach Dale Burdette.

“They are not only successful wrestlers, but also great captains and teammates,” he added. “I know they’ll find success after graduation in whatever path they choose.”

The Mountaineers took advantage of four forfeits on the night and also got a key tech fall from 132-pounder John Reed.

“That was the big win of the night,” Burdette said of the Reed match. “We made him slightly over weight for his normal weight class of 120, so that he’d be eligible to bump to 132. He did what we asked, and we had to have him win for our team to win. He dismantled the guy.”

Burdette praised his whole team in the victory.

“Dual events is really where the team concept comes out in an individual sport like wrestling,” he said. “Guys in other weight classes had to make sacrifices tonight for us to win.”

The Mountaineers will host the Alleghany Duals on Saturday. Wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m.
