Carla Anderson pulled an inside job on the Alleghany Mountaineers.

Northside’s sophomore post recorded a double-double – 21 points and 15 rebounds – as the Vikings downed Alleghany Friday night, 59-44.

Melanie Mirzayan added 13 points and 11 boards for the visiting Vikings.

Friday’s game marked the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.

Kelsey Brown scored 14 points, while Savannah Beard added 10 for the Mountaineers.

“I think our girls are growing up, and they played well at times,” Alleghany coach Danny Keene assessed. “We just don’t have enough offense.”

A series of runs marked the second half of this contest.

Northside led 26-21 at the half and outscored the Mountaineers 9-1 to open a 35-22 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Mountaineers countered with a 10-0 run of their own to whittle their deficit back to three.

A Brown layup and 3-ball started the Mountaineer run, and three straight points by Beth Mason continued the Alleghany spurt.

A basket by Beard trimmed the Vikings’ lead to 37-34 before Northside’s Taylor Carter drained a pair of free throws to close the third quarter, giving Northside a 39-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.

A 13-4 run by the Vikings to open the fourth quarter ended any thoughts of an Alleghany comeback. Mirzayan’s 3-ball gave the Vikings a 52-38 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Anderson scored 15 of Northside’s 26 first-half points.

“We couldn’t handle her,” Keene added. “We tried some different things on her, but she was just too much.”

Northside recorded a 32-26 win in Friday’s jayvee opener.

Katelyn Bowden led the Vikings with 15 points.

For Alleghany, Cristen Walton led the way with nine points, while Karleigh Thompson added six, and Courtney Gillespie scored four. Emily Oyler had three for the Mountaineers, while Darien Nagel and Kari Simmons scored two apiece.

The Vikings led 21-19 at the half.

Alleghany was back in action today as they traveled to Parry McCluer.
