WARM SPRINGS – Artwork by Perlista Y. Henry is on display at the Bath County Public Library throughout the remainder of February and until March 15 in conjunction with Black History Month.
Henry is a resident of West Warm Springs.
The exhibit consists of a group of six paintings called “The Church Collection.”
The watercolor paintings are of the historically African American churches located in Bath County.
Three of the churches were formed by former slaves as early as the 1870s. Four of the churches still hold services today.
The titles are: “From Mt. Pisgah’s Lofty Heights,” “Revisiting John Wesley,” “Come on Up to Mt. Zion,” “Mt Oliver,” “Siloam” and “Piney Grove”.
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, which is located just off Rt. 39 in West Warm Springs, was established by Perlista Henry’s great-great-great grandparents, who were among the founders of this house of worship, which was established in 1876.
John Wesley, also located in West Warm Springs is now the location of the Bath County Senior Center. Piney Grove is located on Rt. 615, just below Hot Springs.
Mt. Oliver is located near the VFW Post in Ashwood. Both Siloam and Mt. Zion churches are in Millboro.
Bath County Public Library hours are: Monday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday, 12 noon until 8 p.m., and Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
