RICHMOND - Members of the Virginia House of Delegates were named to 14 standing committees at the opening session Wednesday.

The committee assignments were made by Republican Speaker of the House William J. Howell of Stafford.

The Highlands are represented in the House by Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford; and Del. Ben Cline, R-Rockbridge.

Putney’s 19th District includes Alleghany County, Covington, Clifton Forge and Iron Gate. Bath County is in Cline’s 24th District.

Putney was named to the Appropriations, Privileges and Elections and Rules committees. He is chairman of the Appropriations Committee.

Howell named Cline to the Commerce and Labor, Courts of Justice, Finance and Militia, Police and Public Safety committees.

Howell said most standing committees in the House now include 22 members, with 15 Republicans and seven Democrats now serving on each.

He said membership of the Courts of Justice Committee was reduced from 22 last session to 18, while the Rules Committee has 15 members.
