SALEM - The Covington boys basketball team just could not pull together during the second half as they fell to the Glenvar Highlanders Tuesday, 76-49.

The Cougars trailed just 29-27 at the half, but were outscored 27-8 in the third frame as Glenvar blew things open.

“We just didn’t have any chemistry or energy in the second half,” said Covington coach Rob Bennett. “We just gave up defensively. The game should have been much closer than it was.”

Karlyn East led the Highlanders (6-4) with a game-high 20 points, while Tyler Crockett added 17.

Troy Helton was the lone Cougar to reach double digits, scoring 12 points. Dominique Jordan finished with nine, while Chad Lipes had six.

Forrest Mayberry scored five, Jacorey Hughes had four, Luke Crawford and Quinten Hunter had three and Jordan Miller rounded out the CHS scoring with two points.

Covington (4-5) will be back in action January 3 at Alleghany and will begin Pioneer District play the following night on the road at Craig County.
