BRIDGEWATER – Alleghany seniors Dakota Scott and Derek Burhenn just missed out on qualifying for this Friday and Saturday’s Group AA tournament by finishing fifth at the Region III tournament this past weekend at Turner Ashby High School.

Scott placed fifth in the 120-pound weight class, while Burhenn finished fifth at 132-pounds.

Also wrestling the final tournament of his high school wrestling career was 182-pounder Nathan Sizemore, who won the Blue Ridge District title but drew the tough side of the bracket at regions.

Heavyweight Addison Morgan won his first match by a 5-4 decision, but was hurt in the match and could no longer continue his season.

“Our seniors will be sorely missed,” stated Alleghany coach Dale Burdette. “They actually wrestled very well, but were facing some pretty tough brackets.

“I really hate that Addison (Morgan) got hurt in his first match and couldn’t compete anymore,” added Burdette. “The guy he beat ended up finishing third so he would’ve had a good chance to make it to states.

“I’m very thankful that we had such a great group of kids this year and a wonderful group of supporting parents,” added Burdette. “I think it’s really something that we can build upon in years to come.”
