Catherine Smith will offer a polymer clay class on Saturday, February 11 from 9:30 am. until 1:30 p.m. at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton Forge.

All polymer clay materials will be provided. Learn a few simple techniques and tricks to cover old kitchen utensils (forks, serving spoons, etc) boxes, jars, scratched CDs, or mirrors with polymer clay, transforming “just stuff” into wonderful objects of art.

Leftover clay can easily become beads and jewelry. Best of all, no experience is necessary. Fee for the class includes all polymer clay materials. Bring a friend and learn something together.

Registration is required by Feb.8. Cost for the class is $60. and there is a minimum of three and a maximum of five students.

A second class “Polymer Clay Techniques: Beads & Beyond” will be offered on February 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 :30 p.m. at the center.

This class will focus on several specific techniques including caning, mokume gane, and impressions.

Caning involves making “snakes” or canes of various colors which are worked together, then sliced off like little multi colored cookies.

Mokume gane is a Japanese techniques that involves blending various colors of the clay together. Impressions are made using molds and stamps to create depth and texture. Have a ball making beads, and constructing various pieces. This is a flexible, fast-paced class that allows you to focus on a particular technique. Depart with many treasures and maybe a new passion.

Registration is required by February 18. Cost is $60, with a minimum of three students and a maximum of five.

Samples of the projects will be available at the AHACC for you to investigate.

Catherine Smith earned a BA in Fine Arts from Chicago State University, then went on to complete a Masters of Art and Liberal Studies with a focus on Studio Arts from Hollins University.

She designs and operates Trashion Fashions, Jewelry and Accessories, which includes jewelry fashioned from ordinary soda cans as an online business, but her work is also available at the Alleghany Highland Arts and Crafts Center shop.

You can see her love of color and texture throughout her painting, collages, and jewelry. Inspirations for her designs come from everyday life, and reflect her love of pattern, and color. On a summer day you may find her enjoying a good book and knitting on her front porch. She is currently is a Computer Lab Manager at Alleghany High School.
