CLIFTON FORGE – The Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in holding two Valentine workshops to send greetings to veterans.
“If you would like to thank a veteran for their services to our country, please come to one or both of these workshops,” said Nancy Newhard-Farrar, executive director of the center. “You will learn some fun ways to make collages and origami hearts at the same time you are doing something nice for a very special group of people.”
Saturday, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, young people from ages 7-15 will be able to make collage valentines, combining different decorative papers and other materials to make the cards.
Participants will be encouraged to keep two valentines for their own use, but the bulk of what is created will be collected, combined with others and taken to the Veterans Home, along with similar projects from across the country, to thank the men and women who have served this country.
All materials will be supplied. Adults are welcome, but will work in a “grown ups” room.
A second creative session will be held on January 28, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., also at the Arts and Crafts Center.
Participants will learn how to use folded paper to make origami hearts that can be used in more valentines.
Again, the participants are encouraged to keep one or two hearts for their own use but the focus is on making valentines for the veterans. The folded paper hearts can be attached to a larger valentine card or slipped inside the card. Again, materials will be furnished by the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center.
There is no charge for the workshops, but people are requested to call the Center at 862-4447 by the preceding Friday to be sure there are plenty of materials on hand.
Valentines for Veterans is being held in collaboration between Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, Blue Spring Run Farm and is a part of Minds Wide Open, a statewide program focusing on children and the arts.
