STAUNTON (AP) – A new report says Virginia’s forests are being threatened by invasive species and development.
The Virginia Department of Forestry’s 2011 State of the Forest report says the state has lost 16,000 acres of woodlands annually over the last decade.
Charlie Becker with the department tells The News Leader development is the primary cause.
According to the report, gypsy moths, the emerald ash borer and other invasive species are the greatest threat to forest health.
The report warns that the emerald ash borer could eventually cost Virginia millions of dollars if it isn’t contained.
